Fontaine Wedding

I once again assisted primary photography Zac Wolf on one of his favorite weddings for the Summer and I turned out with some of my favorite wedding photographs. I had a bit more control over what I was doing and was able to get all the groomsmen and the groom to pose for some formals for me. It was a great day and the wedding went off without a hitch.

Road Trip 2010

These photos were taken over the course of nine days on a road trip from Boston to Los Angeles. I documented my friends and myself at moments of transition- trying to replicate the feel of our travels. We were sleeping in motels, camp sites, and even the Trump tower, not knowing what to expect the next day. This sense of displacement was something that I was hoping to capture. I shot the first bit on the tail end of some Tri-X but the majority of the trip was covered with this cheap “Lumography” stock I picked up last minute at a Ritz Camera. It wasn’t what I really wanted to use but it was the only color stock that they sold. In the end, I kind of wish I would’ve planned a little better and found the time to get some Kodak NC. There’s a lot of grain in the images because of this reason.

Shaw Wedding

Gem of the West

These portraits were taken on the set of “Gem of the West,” a short film from some brilliant minds at Emerson College. It was shot on location in Landers, California at the Whitehorse Ranch. While I was the 1st AC for the film, on the last day of production, we all decided to get into costume and take some crew portraits. I, along with the set photographer, Liz, grabbed our DSLRs and got to work. The lighting is all natural, with a 4×4 half Frost diffusion gel casting some nice light on the subjects. Add a bounce card from below for some fill, and here’s the final product. Enjoy!

Digital Imaging: Color, Series

These photographs comprise the four series of photographs that I shot and presented during my Digital Imaging: Color class at Emerson College. Thanks to my ever-encouraging professor, the great feed-back from other students, and my own personal drive to get the best shots for my concepts, I was able, in the course of a semester, produce some of my most professional and cohesive shots to date.

The first series invovles 5 photographs all based around the color yellow. The second was a self-portraiture focused on the idea of self-improvement. The third was a self-reflective and environmentally-based look on the construction and perception of identity. The last series is a portraiture series that involves the construction/deconstruction of identity in a photograph and investigates how a subject is perceived by a viewer and why (this series was shot on 120 Kodak NC stock). The last series is currently being further explored via my honors thesis project and will most likely come to exbihition sometime in the Spring of ’11.

On-Set

These photos were taken on two student film sets, “Prom Date” and “Elizabeth.” Though it’s only a couple of shots, they represent some of what I really like to shoot on smaller sets.

Portraits

These are a number of different portraits that I’ve taken over the years. Here are the faces that have meant a lot to me over the years. These photos represent the way I see all these individuals, some of whom mean the world to me, and some of whom I only met for a brief moment. I even included some self-portraits that I made in late 2009. These were all made between 2006 and 2010.

Emerson Dance Company Promotional Shoots

These shots of some of my favorite in-studio shots that I’ve taken to date. Though I shot the Fall ’09 promo on a rooftop with some strobes, I was able to get together some time in studio for the Spring ’10 promo with the dancers and use a combination of strobes and continuous LED lights to get my desired look. I gave the dancers some gloves with built in LED lights, got the camera on a tripod, and went to town. What I really liked was that the dancers were actually able to dance instead of having to stop and pose for the camera. It resulted in some stunning shots. For the individual portraits, I again fell back on my cinematography background and got some good old continous lights in the scene. A 2K softbox acted as the fill while another 4 Bank Kino was the key. I used 2 650s for kick/rim lights and then blasted another 650 through a black silk in the background to give that auroral effect. These portraits represent an extension of some of the techniques that I used during the EFS promotional shoots but taken to the next level. I have to thank Lisa Sene, a fellow Emerson student and employee of the Paramount Sound Stage at Emerson, for helping me out during those portraits. I also want to give a shout out to everyone involved in EDC. They’re extremely talented as dancers and have always been extremely professional and considerate toward me and my vision.

“Of The Fog”

This is another film that I worked on, this time only as the photographer. Being the primary photographer gave me the time and energy I needed to get behind the scenes and grab the shots that I needed. I used a number of different formats on this shoot, from RAW to 35mm and 6×7. It was good to finally get the on-set photographer experience that I’d been waiting to get. You’ll also notice that, as a token of gratitude to the crew (and just for fun, really), I decided to take some individual crew shots back at the cabin we were staying at for them to have. All photos were shot in March of 2009.

Emerson Fashion Society’s Top Model

These photographs represent the best of the bunch for Emerson Fashion Society’s “Top Model” cycle 3. I was one of two photographers who covered the event. I covered two photoshoots, one of which was Barbie themed and the other was an Alice in Wonderland theme. All-in-all, it was a good experience, though, in the end run, the fashion world might not be the right suit for me.

However, I was glad that I was able to light the scenes the way I wanted. For the barbie shots, I used two strobe lights, one on the side as a key and shooting through the background to make the simple backdrop pop and separate the models nicely. For the Alice shoot, I found it to be much harder to get the look that I was going for. I ended up using 2 650 and 2 300 watt Arri fresnels and made it work somehow. I even constructed some of my own ghetto diff for the lights out of plastic I found around the place. Thank goodness I have some real gels now…
